GENERAL QUESTIONS
What is an addiction?
There are many different ways an addiction can be defined. But at the heart of it, an addiction is an uncontrolled substance or behavioural dependence that continues in spite of the harm it causes an individual or their community. Addiction is a chronic disease that changes the brain’s neurology, not a choice. Drinking or gambling, for example, are symptoms of the disease, not the cause. Common signs of addiction include an inability to stop, an ever-increasing need for more of the substance or behaviour, a loss of control and continuing the behaviour despite the negative consequences. Most people with an addiction cannot stop on their own, though they often try. Research shows long-term substance abuse or behavioural addiction results in significant changes in brain function. This remodelling may cause behavioural changes, including the compulsion to act out despite the adverse negative consequences. Understanding this biological component helps explain why many individuals cannot achieve and maintain abstinence without treatment.
What does Continuum of Care mean?
When we say Continuum of care, we mean that we have a full range of services to help you. Our services vary in intensity, meaning that we have options for everyone. We know that residential treatment isn’t for everyone, and that those we serve need options for wherever they are in their recovery journey.
How do I know what type of treatment I need?
Navigating the world of mental health treatment can be difficult. If you aren’t sure what you need, our admissions department can help you find the best option for you. We also offer a variety of recognized assessments to measure the severity of your addiction or eating disorder and recommend the appropriate treatment option.
Do I have to be sober to enter EHN programs?
Our residential facilities provide safe and supportive on-site detox by ASAM certified physicians. At our outpatient clinics, each program has different requirements. There are programs for everyone, whether you want to find if you have a problem, or you have 5 years of sobriety.
How long are your programs?
Our programs vary in length. We have intensive outpatient programs that range from 3 weeks to 12 weeks. Our inpatient programs start at 6 weeks in length, but are often open-ended. This means that we continually asses your progress and recommend a safe and healthy time to transition to your next level of care.
Is there a waitlist?
Waitlist times vary for each facility. Please contact our admissions team for up-to-date information.
Where are you located?
Located in a nine-acre oasis of green space in the Leaside neighbourhood of Toronto, we provide a safe and private environment that is conducive to helping patients focus on their addiction treatment and recovery.
FINANCIAL QUESTIONS
How much does treatment cost?
Our programs vary in cost, depending on the level of care needed. Please contact our admissions department for information on programs and fee structures.
Will my insurance cover the cost of treatment?
More and more insurance companies are covering the cost of addiction treatment. Depending on your coverage and province of residence, some or all treatment costs may be covered. You will probably be required to pay for the cost of treatment and submit receipts for reimbursement, and our facilities will assist you by providing appropriate documentation as requested.
